The house is organized around the over-sized three story stair hall open on all three levels, which extends to a monitor with motorized windows to act as a thermal chimney, with the generous operable windows throughout. The clerestory windows flanking the chimney act the same way for this part of the house, and lights the master bath transoms. The hip roof has four foot overhangs for shade and protection of the walls, clad with cypress siding.

The kitchen, master bedroom, screen porch, dining and laundry face uphill to the adjacent Land Trust property. The lower floor has a guest suite, hobby and family rooms, and opens to its own terrace under the front porch.

The study works with a book-lined hall connecting the living and dining rooms, and has a view across the gallery between the living room and screen porch. When completed, the landscaping will be all indigenous, drought resistant materials.

The house is carefully sited to avoid disturbing the outcropping limestone rock and significant trees, while still providing a main-level garage. The owner asked for the house to feel intimate, and not seem imposing from the street below, to bring generous daylight to all spaces, and to respond to the local climate. They also wished to use “green” materials where possible.
