From the first meeting, it became apparent that this project would be more than simply designing a house. The client, a professional football player, desired a completely furnished home in the country, yet still close to town. He also had specific ideas about the property. The house is simply organized.
One enters a central foyer containing a dramatic circular staircase. To the west are private spaces – children’s bedrooms, guest bedrooms, a master suite connected to an exercise and trophy room, and laundry and a computer room. To the east are less formal public spaces – a living room, kitchen, breakfast area, formal dining room, game room and home theatre. Connected to the public spaces is a 6-car garage with a full one bedroom apartment above.
These collections of spaces are arranged so that they present themselves proudly to the street to the west, while sheltering the pool and playground area to the east. One enters the site through a gated vehicular access at the road. A drive meanders downhill and across the creek, offering a variety of vantage points in which to view the house and site features.
A circular driveway and fountain terminate the drive, except for a private spur leading to the garage. Site features include a swimming pool, pool house, lighted sports court, gazebo, a walking trail, and a regulation-size football field. Close collaboration with the landscape architect and interior designer contributed to a cohesive and successful project.
